The Dominican flag was adopted on November 6, 1863, as a rectangle with a width of 8:5. The flag is composed of red, white and blue. White white cross painted with the national emblem. Red symbolizes the fire and blood shed by the founders in their bitter struggle for freedom. The white cross represents religious belief and the spirit of struggle and sacrifice of the people. Blue symbolizes freedom. Dominica was once colonized by Spain and has been used since independence on September 14, 1863.
